OTTAWA - The chief of Canada’s largest private sector union says workers across the country will be under “considerable attack” in 2012. Canadian Auto Workers (CAW) President Ken Lewenza says major plant lockouts by Caterpillar Inc. and Rio Tinto – stemming from deep slashes to union wages, benefits and pension plans – reflect a growing trend in private sector contracts. “My expectation is it will be a very, very tough year for workers,” said Lewenza in an interview with QMI Agency, pointing out Caterpillar’s profits are sky-rocketing. |

MERC co-chair, Eddy Almeida, recently sent out a communication regarding the provincial wide increase of staff suspensions. "I had mentioned...some time ago that I believed there was a growing list of members who were off on suspension for extended amounts of time, and that this was having a negative effect on our work sites as a whole. Local leaders have voiced the same concerns, stating that the process of investigations was no longer an expedited one, taking unreasonable amounts of time, placing those that were suspended with pay under great pressure and stress of not knowing and those suspended without pay, typically Fixed Term Unclassified?s under even greater stress', as they have no financial support from the ministry. |

On November 4, two representatives from the Deputy Ministers office attended Central North to poll the employees on what wouldenhance the professionalism of Corrections. Bill Carson, Chris Jackel and James Landriault sat down with the reps and spoke frankly about the concerns that, you, the membership has expressed in the recent months.
